Big storms, big news, fires ignited by lightning strikes are all around us. We plow through, we keep our head down, and we get the job done. We artist types are sensitive. Sensitive to media, to current events, to the dramatic storms. It is easy to allow the ups and downs of reality to affect our personal mental states. We are overwhelmed at times by what appears to be a world wide state of chaos. But it is in those times that the artist can access that intrinsic sensitivity and tap into a new realm of creative possibilities. The worst of times can bring out the best in people.

I don’t know an artist who exemplifies that creative poise more so than our resident potter Alissa Clark. Ali has been a member of the artisans market for about 15 years on and off. The artist in her can see the world through a whimsical, playful lens, or she can get down right serious about how she sees the world around her. Her art is fun, colorful, and utilitarian for the most part. I love waking up to coffee in my colorful Alissa Clark mug covered in images of a skeleton riding a bicycle. That mug just makes me smile. However, I also remember a series of pieces that she did a few years back that were not intended as utilitarian pieces, but rather strictly art, wall hangings. These clay art pieces really grabbed me at the time as they told a dark, yet hopeful story. They were all images of mother nature taking back the Earth… vines, trees, and other vegetation taking over skyscrapers and cars. These almost post apocalyptic images depicted hope in dark times. If you can’t tell, I’m a big fan of Alissa and her art-form. We are pleased to announce her as the artisan of the week. Come by and visit her booth this weekend and take 10% OFF anything you like.

30 artisans are taking part in this coming weekends two day outdoor marketplace along Ashland Creek. We are open Saturday from 10-6 and Sunday from 11-5. Two days of art, craft, and great music behind the plaza in downtown Ashland. Come on by and discover one of the hidden treasures of our region, the Lithia Artisans Market of Ashland. Woodwork, clothing, hats, pottery, jewelry, fine art, and so much more created locally by folks who take the path less traveled. The old model of locally created art and craft, and the market that makes that possible, is alive and well because it works. Support local, it matters!
