“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” ~ Steve Jobs, visionary, ex-CEO, Apple Computer
This quote by Steve Jobs has been on my mind the last few days. For me personally, this sums up what it means to be a self-employed artist. “Marching to the beat of your own drummer”, is another great cliche that rings true for me. Authentic, well crafted, original art, music, ideas, solutions are what propel the human race forward in our evolutionary journey. Don’t get stuck in the past, don’t judge what is good by comparing it to what already is, don’t limit your own possibilities. Your potential is without limit.
New ideas come from within, or they come through a clear channel from a place none of us truly comprehend. Either the concepts have been brewing in your mind-soul-heart for awhile, or you simply channel the whims of the Universe. Either way, a true artist is going with the flow of the wave of inspiration that is upon him/her. When you are in that zone of creativity nothing in the outside world around you matters. When you tap that source, you are somehow closer to the divine and your intention changes from production to co-creation with self-Universe-God (insert here whatever your higher power may be, or not).
So, the point of this little article is to say, trust yourself as the guide when you go into the studio to dip the brush into the paint, or into the field to bring the world into focus through the lens, or into your shop to grind on metal, stone, wood, or into the sewing room to put the final stitches into that new garment concept. Let go of the clouds of doubt and imagine yourself and your art into being. Give yourself the freedom to bring new light into this world. Dig deeper, go way out there, search for something you have never done before. The world is waiting for your new creations to send us into our collective future.
