The days continue to get shorter, the nights longer. Grizzly Mountain has its first blanket of snow. We all spend more time in the dark this time of the year. Candles warm our hearts and light the path for us, helping us find our way. Candles usher in our Festival of Light. This year let the Ashland Festival of Light be the harbinger of peace and love. Embracing one another and letting our light shine. That is the true spirit of Christmas. Love, light, and creativity sparked by our collective concern for the well being of all living things. Join us for the Festival of Light and be sure to visit the best art and craft show of the season… the Lithia Artisans Christmas Faire.
The elves of the Rogue Valley are busy in their shops creating magical items of adornment, spinning wool into yarn, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Up-cycling discarded garments into one of a kind sweaters that make winter fun! Transforming dead manzanita root into sculptural cribbage boards. Forging sterling silver into bezel settings, gently holding picture jasper cabochons in classic, time honored designs. Fine art, photography, pottery, and so much more will be on display and available for purchase direct from the creators. No middle man at the Lithia Artisans events, just silversmiths, carvers, woodworkers, potters, artists, sculptors, and creative souls making beauty with their hands.
We’ve had a wonderful outdoor season on Calle Guanajuato this year. A special thanks to Ashland Parks and Recreation. We feel so blessed to sell our handcrafted wares along Ashland Creek in Lithia Park. Winter is now close, a chilly northern wind blows through my workshop tonight as I spent time grinding on stones. Slowly moving rocks through my hands, slowly wearing down the hard edges to find the bead below the surface. It is a wonderful, methodical task.
We all do what we can do. The artisans work with their hands and create items to cherish for years to come. For many it is where we find peace and joy. For me it is a meditation. When the world seems crazy we find solace in good work. We find comfort in familiar tasks, familiar rhythms, familiar tools. Sitting down and working a rough apple wood branch into a spoon, that feels familiar to the spoon maker. Those creative tasks feel comfortable and reassuring. When we create enduring beauty we change the world a little at a time.
