Lithia Artisans Market of Ashland is a little open-air marketplace located along Ashland Creek in the heart of Ashland, Oregon. This art and craft market is full of authentic, handcrafted items created by the folks selling. Located on Calle Guanajuato, the market shares space with half a dozen restaurants that offer outdoor dining. Over 35 artisans will be showing their creations this coming weekend. As you stroll along the quaint alleyway behind the plaza you will find carved stone beads, wooden cribbage boards and bowls made from local burl wood, leather shoes made to last a lifetime, sundresses, soaps, jewelry of all kinds, cutting boards, fine art, photography, pottery, tie die t-shirts, and so much more.

The artisans pride themselves in the process of creativity. Getting as close as possible to the source of raw materials helps the creator feel connected to all aspects of the production process. As a stone bead maker I love all parts of the process, particularly finding the rough material in the field. Whether it is beach combing the Oregon coastline, or mining in the desert of Arizona, most lapidary artists are rock hounds at heart. Every one of the artists who shows at the market is meticulous about detail, and conscious of the source of their materials. Every one has a different story, but a common theme is to be as close to the source, and as ecologically minded as possible. As you peruse the marketplace be sure to engage the artisans and ask where they get their raw material. You will find a different story at every booth.
