Fall is all around us. It is harvest time, a time of abundance, the turn of the season. A good time to take stock and store up for the winter. The Holidays will be upon us soon. Take advantage of these wonderfully bright fall days and visit your local artisan market along Ashland creek. The market is bustling with 40 vendors showing over the course of the two day event. As the dark days of winter approach, the light still shines brightly on Calle Guanajuato. This weekend you will find all sorts of silver smithed jewelry, locally carved stones beads, up-cycled fall sweaters, hats by The Hat People, fine art, photography, woodwork, and much, much more. A fine array of meticulously crafted items. Supporting your local artisan is a direct way to support your local economy. We all flourish when we support one another.

The photo above is of Jim Young. Jim and Carol Young are the heart and soul behind the enterprise known as The Hat People. They are also the most veteran members the Lithia Artisans Market of Ashland (LAMA). They have been making and selling hats for over 30 years. They were part of the back to the earth movement of the 1970’3; when folks started to recognize, once again, the value of a simpler way of living. Back to the basics. When they starting making hats they didn’t even have electricity. Carol worked with an old treadle sewing machine while Jim would do the cutting. They lived in a small cabin in the mountains of the southern Oregon coastal range. They would bring their hats to market in Eugene and sell out of their VW Bug. What a great way to start a family and begin to navigate this one precious life we are given. A life dedicated to community, simplicity, family, authenticity, and healthy ways of being. The Hat People are a true inspiration.
