There is a light haze in the air, I hear the sound of a school bus going by, fall is inching ever closer and the Lithia Artisans Market embraces the seasonal changes with over 30 artisans showing this coming weekend. The best locally crafted wares you can find in southern Oregon are right down at Ashland’s original open air marketplace on Calle Guanajuato, along the babbling Ashland Creek. What a wonderful place to shop, get inspired, have lunch at one of many creek-side restaurants. If you are visiting Ashland, be sure to patronize the market, behind the plaza, to see what local hands are creating… jewelry, woodwork, pottery, clothing, hats, photography, fine art, mobiles, drums, body care products, and more.
This weeks featured artisan is a long time member… copper-smith Steve McLaren. Steve is well versed in mythology, ancient religions, and spirituality. He is also well connected to the Earth and constantly pondering the various modes in which we humans interact with mother nature. His art form echoes his connection with the Earth. Bowls pounded from recycled copper (a place to put your new earrings made by Steve), a praying mantas in 3 dimensions to place in your personal garden, a wall piece representing an animal totem… all can be found in Steve’s booth. All the colors you see are created by torch fire. So much color from something we think of as simply the color of a penny. Copper is a remarkable substance if you know how to work it, and Steve knows copper well. Steve’s work is unique and well made. Come by and see him this weekend as everything in his booth is 10% OFF.
Really great lineup of musical talent this weekend. All original songwriting. Great variety. Phil and Aaron Reed make up the duo of guitars and voices we have all come to love. The Brothers Reed write songs about love and life and reality that really hit home for me. Great harmonies, acoustic guitars, playing unplugged at the market. Jeff Stanley plays Saturday afternoon and mesmerizes with remarkable guitar playing and great songwriting. Sunday we begin with Martin Vee, flamenco style free form guitar player. Every time Martin plays it is something new. This is his final performance this year as he is making his way to the East Coast to check out a new scene. Martin has been a great asset to the market over the years and he will be missed. We end the weekend with the original surfer style tunes of Jared Masters. Jared’s songs and style take you on a virtual trip to the ocean. Love his tunes.
Come by the market for live music and hand made cool stuff. Support local, it makes a huge difference!
